DBUTIL: Unix software for accessing 1990 Census data on CD-ROM
Additional LOOKUP documentation:
DBUTIL: the UNIX Interface to 1990 Census Data on CD-ROM
(Nathan Parker)
Abstract
DBUTIL is a collection of subroutines written in C for accessing
1990 Census data on the Internet at the University of California.
DBUTIL requires a Unix computer with NFS access to the Internet.
40 GB of data (83 CD-ROMs) are available, including:
Summary Tape File 1A 18 CD-ROMs
Summary Tape File 1C 1 CD-ROM
Summary Tape File 3A 62 CD-ROMs
Summary Tape File 3C 2 CD-ROMs
-
DBUTIL reads dBase-III DBF and NDX files on the CD-ROMs and produces
formatted ASCII files, with data field descriptors, of the data
selected by the user. As input to DBUTIL the user must create ASCII
input files containing:
-
(1) the name of the data base, for example STF 3A;
-
(2) a list of the data elements (fields) desired;
-
(3) the geographic level of detail desired, for example
census tracts;
-
(4) the geographic scope of the request, for example a list of
counties in one or more states.
Sample Unix shell scripts,
with corresponding input files, are available.
Input and output files, in the
LBL CODATA format,
are compatible
with Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's
SEEDIS
(Socio-Economic Environmental Demographic Information System).
