CD-ROM Information System

Installing public data at a new site

Installing public data at a new site

Integrating your public data into the CD-ROM Information System

benefits

Integration of your public data into the CD-ROM Information System is optional. If you choose to take this step, your users (and other users) can seamlessly access your public data through public domain software which includes:

requirements

Your public data, whether or not they are duplicated elsewhere, will appear in a combined public directory which is used by all the software above. If you decide to integrate your public data into the combined system, you must agree to:

procedure

To accomplish the integration, first install your public data for Internet access and test from a remote NFS client computer. On most Unix systems you can type (for example)
showmount -e mercury.census.gov
In place of mercury.census.gov use the name of your own computer which is exporting the data. Make sure the file systems are NFS-exported with read access, to "everyone."

If possible, test from a PC NFS client to make sure the files are compatible with MS-DOS.

Then send to dwmerrill@lbl.gov the NFS location and a brief description of each public file system. Typically, each public file system is a CD-ROM or a disk copy of one. For example:

	bigsur.lbl.gov:/export/cdrom/cd016
	1990 Census: Summary Tape File 1A: AK,HI,OR,WA
You will be notified by e-mail when integration into the combined Information System is complete.

Check the contents and NFS locations of your data file(s), and click on the appropriate diskN entries to verify FTP availability.

Optionally, you can then complete the remaining installation tasks.

optional: statistical summaries of NFS accesses

Optionally, statistical summaries of NFS accesses to your public data files can be automatically updated and published daily, along with similar statistics from other NFS servers. If you agree to this, you must (additionally)

LBNL also privately summarizes counts by (3) by client organization and month. The client statistics are considered confidential and are provided only to the system managers who have integrated their public data into the CD-ROM system.
