Installing 1990 Census LOOKUP

You need not install LOOKUP in your own WWW server, but performance for your users will be improved if you do so. This improvement is independent of the improvement that will be gained by installing your own local data files for Internet access.

To install LOOKUP you must first install DBUTIL in order to access files in dBase format.

Copies of the LOOKUP source code were formerly located aat
ftp://bigsur.lbl.gov/pub/src/lookup.1.3.0b.tar.Z (SUNOS version 1.3.0b)
ftp://bigsur.lbl.gov/pub/src/lookup.1.3.0a.tar.gz SOLARIS version 1.3.0a)

In fall 1996, bigsur.lbl.gov (aka cedrcd.lbl.gov) was taken off line and the computer moved to the UC Berkeley Campus. A copy of the bigsur disk was archived on LBL MSS, under /home/mss/icsd/merrill/from-bigsur/export/data/u0/CDROM_support.tar.gz (run gunzip, then tar). A directory listing is stored at /home/mss/icsd/merrill/from-bigsur/export/data/u0/CDROM_support.ls

The LOOKUP software is in the public domain, but a LBL computer account is required to access MSS.

For the latest SUNOS version (1.3.0b), download the file that was on ftp://bigsur.lbl.gov/pub/src/lookup.1.3.0b.tar.Z

then use Unix decompress and then tar to obtain the individual files.

For the latest Solaris version (1.3.0a), download the file which was on ftp://bigsur.lbl.gov/pub/src/lookup.1.3.0a.tar.gz, which was obtained on 5/19/96 from ftp://ftp.census.gov:/pub/packages/Unix/lookup.1.3.0a.tar.gz
(71 Kb Sun Feb 5 18:45:00 1995)
Use Unix gunzip and then tar -xvf to obtain the individual files. Then cd to the src directory and make depend.
This version will not compile with any version of gcc later than 2.5.8. Chris Stuber has a newer version of LOOKUP which will compile with gcc 2.6.X.

(The version of LOOKUP at LBNL (1.3.0.b2) compiled OK at www.census.gov but does not work properly under Solaris).
For more information about the Solaris version of LOOKUP, contact hchen@amani.ces.ncsu.edu.

Note from Chris Stuber 5/3/96:
1. LOOKUP requires the GNU C Compiler 2.6.3 (does not work with later versions from Chris' experience).
2. LOOKUP requires prototypes found in the GNU Lib C++ 2.6.2.
Chris has copies of both packages and wants to make them public since they are now obsolete and becoming increasing harder to find on the net. Alternately, Chris would like to fix LOOKUP to work with later versions of the compiler and libc++. It doesn't look as though the Census Bureau wants to maintain LOOKUP in the future.

LOOKUP installation notes from Chris Stuber:

Optionally, if you choose to give LBL private access to your LOOKUP log files, LBL will each day summarize and publish usage statistics from your LOOKUP server along with those from other LOOKUP servers. LOOKUP usage information by client is considered confidential and is provided only to the system managers who have installed LOOKUP in their own WWW servers.

For LOOKUP (on any WWW server) to use your local public data files, you must first install your own data for Internet access and then integrate your public data into the CD-ROM Information System. This process is independent of installing LOOKUP.
