Installing the PC menu system

The expertise of an experienced system manager is generally required to connect a PC client computer to the Internet and to install NFS software. After NFS is installed, installation of the PC menu system is a very simple additional step. No files are copied to the user's PC; instead, PC-NFS operates on files that are stored at LBL.

However, it may be desirable to replicate portions of the PC menu system software in your local PC in order to improve efficiency. This can be easily accomplished by any person familar with MS-DOS.

In the default configuration, files at LBL are on the NFS-mounted E:\ drive. To improve efficiency, copy these files to the local C:\ drive and use the local files instead.

Note: The files in E:\mount\ and E:\batch\inform\location\ are frequently modified at LBL, to reflect the changing locations of public data in the CD-ROM Information System. It is necessary to use these files directly, or at least make sure the latest version is always available in the local C:\ drive.
