2.8 - LOOKUP-related bugs with America Online

As of 5/18/96, there are no known LOOKUP bugs specific to the AOL browser version 2.5, PROVIDED one uses LOOKUP version 1.4, which is currently installed on www.census.gov and venus.census.gov (only).

However, see:

• LOOKUP bugs which have nothing to do with specific browsers

If you run into problems with the AOL browser, please try LOOKUP version 1.4 and report any problems to lookup@census.gov.

Regarding the problems listed below, messages were sent to webmaster@aol.com on 8/1/95, 8/13/95, 2/21/96, and 3/7/96.

Due to incomplete information from users, it is not known which bugs are platform-specific (Mac vs PC).

A response received on 11/9/95 apologized for the problems and promised that the next version of AOL will support third party Web applications. The following message was received 2/22/96 from webmaster@aol.com:

The next release of the AOL browser supports most HTML 3.0 and Netscapese extensions as well as a bevy of bug fixes. Very few tags are not supported. I can't be specific as to which new tags will be supported; I _can_ say that we are trying to be driven by IETF standards rather than market forces. It's likely that we will be supporting much of the proposed HTML 3.0 specification. We will probably _not_ include tags which "deviate" from this proposed standard. AOL Macintosh Web software

2.8.1.1 - The AOL Macintosh Web software does not work properly with LOOKUP. The state selection menu appears as two separate pull-down menus.
For example: can't select just Maryland, also get Montana.
This problem affects only the Mac software. The AOL Windows Web software (version 107.1) works correctly.
Will someone please test whether command-click (i.e. holding the command key down while clicking the mouse) gives the same problem?

2.8.1.4 - With AOL Macintosh Web software, the preformatted text generated by LOOKUP has lines that are longer then the standard size of the Windows browser display window.
The user must manually increase the browser window size to view some results.

AOL Windows Web software

2.8.2.1 - With AOL Windows Web software, accessing demographic data for a single zip code (11375), LOOKUP puts the data onto the screen with no problem. However, when one tries to save the output from the screen, the software refuses to open a save file and a window pops up asking for a screen name. The LOOKUP output is forms output; the problem probably occurs for any forms output. The problem does not occur with ordinary HTML files. Similar problems have been reported with Netscape for MS Windows.

2.8.2.2 - With AOL Windows Web software, in pull-down menus of state names. Each menu behaves as a list of "radio buttons" rather than check boxes. It is not possible to select more than one state from each list, and it is not possible erase a state from either menu, except by selecting another state.
To see this problem, try example #2 and watch for the problem in step 4.
Will someone please test whether Ctrl-click (i.e. holding the Ctrl key down while clicking the mouse) gives the same problem?
