If you run into problems with Netscape, please try LOOKUP version 1.4 and report any problems to lookup@census.gov.
Most of this page is of historical interest only.
The problem does NOT occur
in Mac version 1.12, or XWindows version 1.1N,
or Windows95 windows 32-bit version 2.0.
The problem DOES occur in Mozilla 2.01 (Win95; I; 16bit).
(The same problem DOES occur in MS Windows Mosaic.)
To reproduce the problem, follow the complete example in http://parep2.lbl.gov/mpub/cdrom/doc/lookup_example.html .

Workarounds:
If you are using a 16-bit version of Netscape, switch to Windows 95 and try the 32-bit version.
In Windows 3.X,
if the file is under 30K, you can mail the data file to yourself with
"File" then "Mail Document.." then "Quote Document" (except in version 2.0b1
where "Quote Doc" does not work.)
Attempting to "Attach" the document either as Document Text or Document Source
will not work. You will obtain only a copy of the LOOKUP home page.
Mailing files under 30K with "Quote Document" works with all three formats
(HTML, tab-delimited and Codata), except the tabs in tab-delimited format
are converted to multiple spaces, which is inconvenient.
In Windows 3.X, for files over 30K, Steve Fricker has described a workaround which uses the Netscape disk cache.
Simon Clegg has described another workaround which uses Notepad as a "Supporting Application".
2.1.1.2 -
With Windows 3.X Netscape version 2.0,
forms output with the POST option (for example LOOKUP output)
cannot be mailed with "Mail Document..." and "Quote Doc".
Instead of the data which is on the screen, the main LOOKUP URL (which
appears in the Location window) is mailed instead.
(dwmerrill@lbl.gov 10/13/95).
(mitc0010@gold.tc.umn.edu 11/14/95 with Mozilla 2.0b2 (Windows; I; 32bit))
A message was sent to win_cbug@netscape.com (via bug report form) on 10/13/95.
No reply was received.
This is a general Netscape problem for forms with the POST option,
not specific to LOOKUP.
This problem occurs with Windows 3.X version 2.0
but not version 1.22. It occurs also with Windows95 version 2.0.
It affects all three LOOKUP output formats (HTML, tab-delimited, and
Codata).
Use an earlier version of Windows 3.X Netscape, for example 1.22.
2.1.1.3 -
With Netscape for Windows 3.X, forms output with the POST option
(for example LOOKUP output)
cannot be mailed with "Mail Document..." and "Attach..."
Instead of the data which is on the screen, the main LOOKUP URL (which

This is a general Netscape problem with forms output with the POST option,
not specific to LOOKUP.
This problem occurs in all versions of Netscape (Windows, Mac, and Xwindows,
Window95).
It affects all three LOOKUP output formats (HTML, tab-delimited, and
Codata).
It affects Document Text, Document Source, and Postscript.
A message was sent to win_cbug@netscape.com (via bug report form) on 10/13/95.
Use "Quote document" instead of "Attach..." In MS Windows Netscape,
documents under 30K can be quoted (except in version 2.0b1 where "Quote Doc"
does not work).
If the document is over 30K, you can use a
crude workaround
to recover the output from the Netscape cache, then mail the output
file from outside Netscape.
2.1.1.4 -
With Windows 3.X Netscape version
0.92 Beta or 1.0N or 1.1N, error is "DB tag missing."

(library@hope.cit.hope.edu 9/19/95)
(operator@tigger.stcloud.msus.edu 10/9/95)
Update Windows 3.X Netscape to a later version.
2.1.1.5 -
With MS Windows Netscape 1.0N or 1.1N or 1.22, error is
"cod_read_data passed a codata containing no DE's".
(rfrench@teleport.com 8/25/95)

(adrian@linex.com 10/31/95) with Mozilla 1.22 (Windows; I; 16bit)
Can anyone provide an example which consistently reproduces
this problem on all three LOOKUP servers?
2.1.1.6 -
With MS Windows Netscape, error is
"CGI Server Error: POST - /date=809038010: Exit val: 139"
(val.solovjovs@sunny.health.state.mn.us 8/21/95 with
Mozilla 1.2.b1 (Windows; I; 16bit))
(LaPalme@env.duke.edu 9/29/95, version unknown, with STF3A for NH.)
(rolfp@uriacc.uri.edu 10/10/95, with STF3A for RI?)
This problem occurred with LOOKUP 1.3.0b.
Can anyone reproduce this problem?
There were
known problems
in the production of STF3A CDs for New England states.
The defective CDs were replaced on 10/19/95.
2.1.1.7 -
With MS Windows Netscape 2.0, numeric data are off left edge of screen
and cannot be seen even after scrolling to extreme left. Bug was observed
with zip code data, with html format. Printing also did not show the
numbers.
kfb7@cehdeh1.em.cdc.gov 3/13/96 with Mozilla/2.0 (Win16; I)
This can occur if the fonts used by Netscape are not properly configured.
Consult your Windows and Netscape documentation.
2.1.1.8 -
With Netscape "Mozilla/1.2 (compatible; PCN-The PointCast Network 0.91/win16)"
via a proxy gateway "CERN-HTTPD/3.0 libwww/2.17" cannot print LOOKUP
output. This problem persists with LOOKUP version 1.4
(internet.ken.nemson@we.xerox.com 5/21/96).
Please report back to lookup@census.gov if this problem persists with the
latest version of Netscape.
