PC-based Menu System for Accessing CD-ROM Data

An interactive menu system provides direct access to the data on CD-ROM. The menu system requires a PC-compatible computer with direct NFS access to the Internet, via PC-NFS or PC/TCP or a compatible substitute. (The menu system is not yet configured to work with Tsoft NFS.)

The PC menu system is mounted remotely via NFS, and need not be copied to the user's local PC disk.

Responding to a menu on the PC screen, the user specifies the database and state(s) desired, and the proper CD-ROM diskette is automatically mounted. Then the user automatically enters a program which allows specific data items to be selected and displayed.

For example, for 1990 Census databases, the user has a choice of GO or EXTRACT (two MS-DOS programs provided by the Bureau of the Census). Recent versions of GO and EXTRACT, downloaded from the Census Bureau bulletin board are used.

The known bugs in the PC menu system are the result of:
CD-ROMs that are incompatible with NFS
software from outside providers
You may have additional problems (not listed here) depending on your PC hardware and software configuration.
