defective CD-ROMs (errors in production)
STF3A
Several STF3A CDs
need to be re-mastered by the Bureau of the Census.
An explanatory note was received from
Jim Clark
on 3/1/95.
In November 1994 a replacement (disk90) was issued for the defective
1992 TIGER (DE,DC,VA) (disk 199).
Two CDs (disk142 and disk158) were reissued in October 1995 to
correct STF3A errors in the New England states. The remaining problems
remain to be corrected.
-
(disk155) (STF3A for Kansas)
In the file stf300ks.dbf, the first 15885 records appear
OK. records 15887 to 15993 are bad (fileid=TF3A). After that processing
continues without problems. The problem has been verified on another copy of
the same CD. H.Meij (CIESIN) reported the problem on 9/23/94
to C.Stuber, Bureau of the Census.
-
(disk143) (STF3A for DE,DC,MD)
On 11/23/94, Sidney Wong (sidney@ced.berkeley.edu) discovered that GO and
EXTRACT do not work properly for STF3A Delaware data. EXTRACT displays
a dictionary that belongs to STF3B instead of STF3A, and GO does not work at
all. There is no problem with Maryland STF3A data on the same CD. The
Delaware problem affects only GO and EXTRACT, not DBUTIL or LOOKUP.
-
(disk178) (STF3A for OH: Morrow-Wyandot)
On 9/18/95, Mary Snider (mary@spatial.ead.anl.gov) discovered that in the
STF3A file at the blockgroup level the following block group is
missing:
State: Ohio
County: Portage
Place: Ravenna City
Tractbna: 6008
Blockgroup:4
In the STF1A file this blockgroup shows 107 persons. The problem has been
confirmed with both LOOKUP and GO. There are seven other block groups in
the same tract which have no problem. The 100% population counts in STF3A
(except for the missing block group 4) agree with the population counts in
STF1A. On 9/19/95 the problem was reported to Gloria Porter in the Decennial
Management Office (gloria_j_porter@ccmail.census.gov).
On 10/11/95 an explanatory fax was received from
Peggy Payne.
STF1D/STF3D
(104th Congressional Districts)
On 10/2/95 Sherry Quinones (Sherry@ruf.rice.edu) reported problems
with the STF1D/3D CD with 104th Congressional districts (disk250).
She reported that employment tables were missing for two states.
Further investigation revealed that in (at least) table 62,
state level STF3D data for the following states (only)
contain numbers without leading zeros.
13 Georgia
22 Louisiana
27 Minnesota
45 South Carolina
51 Virginia
It is not yet known whether the problem also affects other tables, other
geographic levels, STF1D, or the older CD with 103rd Congressional Districts.
The problem was reported to webmaster@census.gov on 10/2/95.
(Who can shed more light on this problem?)
In addition the data for Puerto Rico are missing.

An explanatory note was distributed by
Peggy Walker,
Florida Atlantic University,
on 5/18/95, and subsequently corrected by Dave Paletz of the Census Bureau.
