Sample Unix C-shell scripts for accessing 1990 Census Data

Abstract

The directory

http://parep2.lbl.gov/mpub/census90/
ftp://cedrcd.lbl.gov/CEDRCD/data1/merrill/census90/
nfs://cedr.lbl.gov/CEDRCD/data1/merrill/census90/

contains sample Unix C-shell (csh) scripts for accessing 1990 Census data on the Internet at the University of California. These routines require a Unix computer with NFS access to the Internet. The examples can be modified to obtain data from any of the following:

	Summary Tape File 1A	18 CD-ROMs
	Summary Tape File 1C	1 CD-ROM
	Summary Tape File 3A	62 CD-ROMs
	Summary Tape File 3C	2 CD-ROMs

DBUTIL

The C-shell scripts make use of the Unix-based DBUTIL software package written by Nathan Parker. DBUTIL reads dBase-III DBF and NDX files on the CD-ROMs and produces formatted ASCII files, with data field descriptors, of the data selected by the user. Input and output file formats are compatible with Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's SEEDIS (Socio-Economic Environmental Demographic Information System).

How to run DBUTIL
