CD-ROM software

The CD-ROM System has been moved from LBNL to UC Berkeley. The LBNL Web pages are no longer maintained and are provided temporarily for historical purposes only. Users not needing the historical information should refer to the new CD-ROM home page, at UC Berkeley.

LOOKUP
For WWW clients (Netscape, Mosaic, Lynx, etc.) with forms capability, an experimental WWW server retrieves data from 1990 Census Summary Tape Files STF1A, STF1C, STF3A, and STF3C.

shell scripts and DBUTIL
UNIX users with NFS Internet access can imitate sample shell scripts which use DBUTIL to extract selected data from 1990 Census data files. With DBUTIL you can obtain a few data elements not available in LOOKUP, for example land and water area. You can run DBUTIL in batch mode, using script files which can be easily modified for different runs.

NFS
With the necessary software, most Internet computers can use the NFS (Network File Services) protocol to use the CD-ROMs exactly as if they were locally mounted.

PC users with NFS Internet access have several software options:

FTP
Finally, the Internet anonymous FTP (file transfer protocol) can be used to obtain directory listings and transfer entire files to one's own work station.
