Deane - MapInfo (Troy, New York) produces desktop GIS software and third party data. Their web site is - http://www.io.org/~gosho/mi_site.htm

Strategic Mapping is in Sunnyvale/Cupertino and produces Atlas GIS for Windows and DOS. Their stuff is proprietary as well.

These two are the most common desktop GIS products. ESRI of Redlands, CA produces a series of well-known GIS products as well. Also proprietary.

Of the 3, MapInfo probably has the most open structure, capable of accepting a variety of data formats.

What software are you using? As you know, that will determine the source you should approach.

A more generic source of the data might be GDT of Lyme, New Hampshire. Their web site is - http://www.gdt1.com/history.html

If you'd care to share what your goal is, I might be able to direct you a little more thoroughly. The zip code files are used quite successfully by a lot of businesses and agencies to target or focus study.
