It was reported in The Merrill Newsletter, Vol.1, No.2, pg.5 (October 1991) by Don Merrill dmerrill@gte.net in an article "Nathaniel in the White House," that Barbara PIERCE Bush (1925-) is a third (great) grandniece of President Franklin PIERCE (1804-1869) and therefore a descendant of Nathaniel Merrill b.1601. This statement is incorrect. Barbara and Franklin are fourth cousins four times removed (4C4R), and Barbara does not have (known) Merrill ancestry. For details and sources, see barbara.html.
