Assignment of Nathaniel Merrill b.1601 to Haplogroup G

In Y-chromosome DNA analysis, a Haplotype is a unique set of measured STR marker values for a particular individual or a group of individuals.

A Haplogroup is a group of similar haplotypes that share a common ancestor with a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) mutation. Because a haplogroup consists of similar haplotypes, this is what makes it possible to predict a haplogroup from haplotypes. An SNP test confirms a haplogroup. Haplogroups are assigned letters of the alphabet, and refinements consist of additional number and letter combinations, for example R1b1.

Descendants of Nathaniel Merrill exhibit a particular set of SNP mutations that characterize the G2a Haplogroup, a subset of the G Haplogroup.  Ray Banks has defined finer Haplogroup G subclasses.  The one to which Nathaniel Merrill b.1601 and his descendants belong, is known as

"G2a3b1 (DYS388=13) on genetic branch ^A."  http://www.members.cox.net/generalbanks/G2aBranch6A.html
