1970 Census data at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

In the 1970's, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) purchased and processed the following portions of the 1970 Census of Population and Housing:

Second count population (complete count): 53 million data values
0.3 GB compressed, 0.5 GB uncompressed
Fourth count population (sample count): 460 million data values
0.8 GB compressed, 4.6 GB uncompressed
Fifth count population (sample count): 5 million data values
0.1 GB compressed, 0.1 GB uncompressed
Fifth count special tabulation, pop and housing, (sample count): 260 million data values
0.6 GB compressed, 2.6 GB uncompressed
Sixth count population (sample count): 210 million data values
0.6 GB compressed, 2.1 GB uncompressed

Total of the files above: 2.5 GB compressed, 10 GB uncompressed.

Other 1970 Census data not listed below include MEDLIST and MEDLIST-X (MEDX); 1970 Census tract map files; the 1970 Census Public Use Sample; Sixth Count Housing data (California only); and some small extracts from the Population First Count and Fourth Count.

Only MEDX, the tract map files, and the Fifth Count special tabulation for BG/EDs (below) are installed in SEEDIS.

All the files listed below are stored on disk in an internal Census Bureau computer, in SEEDIS compressed format. Harvard Holmes has written a short C program seed2txt which will convert a SEEDIS compressed file to ASCII text.
