troubleshooting SEEDIS cache problems

The following example shows how to trouble-shoot unfinished batch jobs in the SEEDIS cache queue; how to determine what files have recently been cached; and how to remove spurious jobs from the batch queue.

an actual example: 1/27/98

1. move to [cache] default directory.
2. look for pending cache requests.
2a. Check files in the user's directory.
3. look for pending jobs in the cache queue.
4. Determine the identity of the pending cache jobs.
5. find all pending BCKCLAIM requests.
6. Look at BCKCLAIM request 120212574.
7. Examine recent BCKCLAIM log files.
8. Which logs were for BCKCLAIM job 120212574?
9. Look for recent (successful) additions to SEEDIS cache.
10. Which files were cached in each of the successful runs?
11. Which STF3 COUNTY80 files are presently in the SEEDIS disk cache?
12. Delete unneeded pending jobs.
13. Purge (most) old log files.
14. Remove files from temporary scratch disk.
15. Complete user request in DKA300:[USERS.CSTUBER].

1. move to [cache] default directory.
rlogin seedis.census.gov -l cache
$ set def [cache]

2. look for pending cache requests.
[note: "ds" is a global symbol for dir/size/date]
$ ds *.ar

cache.ar is never empty.
The following commands display its contents:
$ ar tv cache.ar
$ cat cache.ar

allcache.ar is the top-level request queue. It gets an entry as soon
as a user makes a cache request of any kind.
The following command displays its contents.
$ ar tv allcache.ar
$ ar p allcache.ar (number) displays the contents of subset (number), where
(number) (for example 270410049) is a 9-digit integer representing
date/time in format ddhhmmss.s. The contents of subset (number)
(for example DKA300:[USERS.CSTUBER.TEMP])
specify the directory (userdir)
in which the user's job was run.

backup.ar gets an entry if a BCK tar archive is needed.
The following command displays its contents.
$ ar tv backup.ar
$ ar p backup.ar displays the contents of subset ,
where is a 9-digit integer representing date/time in format
ddhhmmss.s.

bckclaim.ar gets an entry when a BCK tar archive has been read, and the
files are ready for the SEEDIS cache.
The following command displays its contents.
$ ar tv bckclaim.ar
$ ar p bckclaim.ar displays the contents of subset ,
where is a 9-digit integer representing date/time in format
ddhhmmss.s.

2a. Logging in as SYSTEM, Check files in the user's directory.
$set host seed01
Username: system
Password:
$set def , for example $set def DKA300:[USERS.CSTUBER.TEMP]

The presence of temporary files *.ar indicates that caching for this job
is not yet complete:
$ds *.ar
270410049.AR;1             0  27-JAN-1998 04:10:10.98
270431426.AR;1             0  27-JAN-1998 04:31:45.19
STATUS.AR;1                1  27-JAN-1998 04:32:04.06

status.ar is the top level status file. It contains:
$cat status.ar
#-h- 270410049         36  asc  27-jan-98 04:10:11  cstuber
0039001 DATACACHE PLACE80 ALLCACHE
#-h- 270431426         20  asc  27-jan-98 04:32:04  cstuber
DATACACHE ALLCACHE
It has not completed because it is waiting for completion of two
subordinate jobs: 270410049 and 270431426.
The file 270410049.ar and 270431426.ar are both empty, indicating that those
jobs have not completed.

(Each cache process, when completed, writes
a line to one of those files. A background job, running intermittently
as user CSTUBER, checks the status of those files. When caching is complete,
the required data are extracted from the cache and written to the user's
output file codata.dat, and the temporary files *.ar are deleted from the
user's directory.)

The word DATACACHE indicates that area selection was complete.

The completed geocode. file contains:
$cat geocode.
AREAS = 1
NDE = 3
CARDLENGTH = 70
TYPE = A
USE = D
*LEVEL = PLACE80

   LENGTH = 33
END DDF
240995MD UPPER MARLBORO TOWN

The selected geographic area was the single PLACE80=240995.

The data selection file delist.dat contains:
$cat delist.dat

11. Which STF3 COUNTY80 files are presently in the SEEDIS disk cache?
$ds/total sy$cachetemp:[cache.temp.seedata.stf3.county80]

Directory DKA400:[CACHE.TEMP.SEEDATA.STF3.COUNTY80]
Total of 102 files, 19787 blocks.

As of April 22, All 51 states including DC are present.
It is mysterious, but now unimportant, why the first of the 82-file Apr 18
request had not completed after four days. It is also mysterious, but now
unimportant, why the April 12 BCKCLAIM request was still in bckclaim.ar.

12. Delete unneeded pending jobs.

The BCKCLAIM jobs in the batch queue, and the BCKCLAIM request in
bckclaim.ar, are not needed because S24.DAT and S24.NDX are already
in the cache.

$ show queue seed01_background
  Entry  Jobname         Username             Status
  -----  -------         --------             ------
    140  BCKCLAIM        CACHE                Holding until 22-APR-1997 17:48:27
    171  BCKCLAIM        CACHE                Holding until 25-APR-1997 04:05:58
    175  BCKCLAIM        CACHE                Holding until 22-APR-1997 18:26:53
$ delete/entry=140
$ delete/entry=171
$ delete/entry=175

$ ar tv bckclaim.ar
120212574        337  asc  22-apr-97 10:56:32  cache
$ ar dv bckclaim.ar

The user batch jobs owned by user CSTUBER will abort and disappear one by one,
due to the absence of bckclaim.ar. Optionally, user CSTUBER may remove his own
pending batch jobs from the queue.

13. Purge (most) old log files.
$purge/keep=5 *.log

Future requests for any or all STF3 COUNTY80 data will now be quickly
satisfied without the need for any GSS cache activity. Such requests will
produce temporary files allcache.ar and touch.ar; log files allcache.log
and touchall.log; and new entries in the cache log files
sy$cachelog:t9704apr.df and sy$cachelog:f9704apr.df.

14. Remove files from temporary scratch disk.
These files may be globally deleted if there are NO more pending cache jobs.

$set def dka700:[cache_files]
$set prot=o:rwed [...]*.dir
(repeat the following command several times to remove all subdirectories)
$dele/log [...]*.*.*

15. Complete user request in DKA300:[USERS.CSTUBER].
Due to irregularities that occurred, the user's extraction job may or may not
have completed successfully. In order, try the following:

15a. Look for complete codata file.
rlogin seedis.census.gov -l cstuber
$ set def dka300:[users.cstuber]
$ crt codata.dat

15b. If codata file is incomplete, finish the extraction manually:
$ set def dka300:[users.cstuber]
$ seedis
: continue

15c. If this is unsuccessful, cancel DATA module and repeat request:
$ seedis
: data
: cancel

15d. If you saved the previous delist.dat (as delist.sav), use it now:
: $copy delist.sav delist.dat
: extract

15e. If you did not save the previous delist.dat, make a new one and use it:
$ seedis
: data
: cancel
: cf (database code for STF3)
(select data elements required)
: quit
: $ copy delist.dat delist.sav  (optional, to save delist.dat for future use)
: extract

15f. If the directory is corrupted or confused, login again and restart
seedis from an empty directory:
rlogin seedis.census.gov -l cstuber
$ set def dka300:[users.cstuber]
$ delete *.*.*
$ seedis
