The Socio-Economic Environmental Demographic Information System (SEEDIS) is an integrated information system, developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, which provides access to geographically based public data files from the 1970's and 1980's. SEEDIS includes 1980 Census data and about 100 other databases, with extensive on-line documentation.
Data selected by the user and obtained from SEEDIS are written to a formatted ASCII file suitable for downloading, printing, or further processing in the user's computer. The output file contains a complete description of each data column (data element); each row (geographic area) is identified by a unique set of geographic codes (geocodes) and a descriptive name.
SEEDIS represents approximately 100 person-years of development effort between 1970 and 1985. The first version of SEEDIS ran in a Control Data Corporation 6600 mainframe computer from 1975 until 1980. The second version ran from 1980 until 1997 in a Digital VAX computer at LBNL. In 1996-97 SEEDIS was transferred to an internal computer at the Bureau of the Census. In the future, SEEDIS data, including 1960, 1970 and 1980 Census data, will be made available through Web-based information systems currently under development at the Census Bureau.
A printed user's guide, for the SEEDIS system installed at the Census Bureau, is available from Deane Merrill. Although the list of available databases is incomplete, that document correctly describes the current SEEDIS user interface and provides examples of use.
There are a total of 110 databases in SEEDIS, which may be generally classified as follows:
census 20 energy 3 environment 19 geography 11 health 33 socioeconomic 24
In SEEDIS a database is defined as a fixed list of data elements which are available for one or more geographic areas. The list of geographic areas may include entries from different geographic levels, for example a list of cities and a list of counties.
There are also (concidentally) 110 geographic levels in SEEDIS, including:
nation and large interstate levels 11 small interstate levels 20 state parts of interstate levels 21 state and large intrastate levels 19 county levels 16 place and MCD levels 10 small subcounty levels 13
The following is a list of databases available in SEEDIS. Each database has its on-line data dictionary, which can be browsed from within SEEDIS, or downloaded and printed by the user. Each data dictionary contains
Code: Unique SEEDIS database code.
Title: Name of SEEDIS database
Lvls: Number of available geographic levels. Example of geographic levels are STATE (states including DC), COUNTY80 (1980 Census counties), TRACT80 (1980 Census tracts), etc. For a complete description of SEEDIS geographic levels, enter SEEDIS and type after the first prompt:
area show
The same information is available via anonymous FTP as: cedrcd.lbl.gov:/data1/merrill/docs/cedr/level.hel
Max Scope: Scope of geographic coverage (the maximum for any geographic level). For example, US means the United States. Data bases with Max Scope equal to "NONE" are available at LBNL, but not installed in SEEDIS. For a complete description of the geographic scope of each database at each geographic level, enter SEEDIS and type after the first prompt:
show
The same information is available via anonymous FTP as: cedrcd.lbl.gov:/data1/merrill/docs/cedr/databases.hel
Areas: Total number of geographic areas. Equal to the number of geographic areas at each level (for example 3137 COUNTY80s in the US), summed over all available geographic levels. There is double counting; for example, for a particular database, Washington DC might be counted as a STATE and a COUNTY80 and a PLACE80 (1980 Census place) and a COUNTY (1970 Census county) and a PLACE (1970 Census place).
Nde: Number of data elements (fields) available for each geographic area.
For example, SEEDIS database AQ contains data from the 1970 Census Fourth Count Population file (total of all races combined). Data are available for two geographic levels: 52 STATEs including DC and Puerto Rico, and 243 SMSA71s (Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas as defined in 1971). There are 1178 data elements (fields) available for each geographic area.
SEEDIS database AR contains the same data for whites only. These data cover only the US (excluding Puerto Rico): 51 STATEs including DC, and 243 SMSA71s.

Geographic map files in SEEDIS:
Geographic map files in SEEDIS include:
boundaries of 1970 census tracts centroids of 1970 block groups boundaries of 1980 census tracts boundaries of 1980 minor civil divisions (MCDs) centroids of 1980 block groups boundaries of most larger units (counties, SMSAs, states, etc.)
The 1980 tract and MCD boundary files were purchased from a private vendor and may be used only within SEEDIS, or by special license arrangement.
In addition to SEEDIS, LBNL had 1970 Census data that are not fully installed for online access in SEEDIS. In 1994-95 these data were transferred from tape to LBNL's on-line mass storage system (MSS), and in 1996-97 to an internal computer at the Census Bureau. These data are in a compressed format suitable for installation in SEEDIS. Software is available to convert the data to ASCII text files.

In addition to SEEDIS, LBNL had comprehensive county level mortality data that are not installed in SEEDIS. The original data are anonymous unit records (microdata) containing age, sex, race, date of death, county of residence, and underlying cause of death (4-digit ICD code). In 1994-95 these data were transferred from tape to LBNL's on-line mass storage system (MSS), and in 1996-97 to an internal computer at the Census Bureau. These data are ASCII flat files suitable for processing with a statistical analysis system such as SAS.
