PAREP tape archiving project

tape assignments

The tape archive of the PAREP project contains over 2000 nine-track tapes of census and health data, which are being copied in a standard format to the LBL mass storage system (MSS). Three students (Brad Asztalos, Alex Petrushko and Alan Su) under Deane Merrill's supervision have written the necessary software and are processing the tapes on a regular weekly schedule.

As of September 1994 approximately 1000 the tapes have been processed, with a 70-80 percent success rate. About 500 more have been preprocessed to determine their format. The software is being constantly revised to accommodate new problems as they arise.

tape formats

Tapes processed in the archiving activity of the PAREP project are being archived in the LBL mass storage system (MSS).

Approximately 700 of the 2000 tapes are in the old LBL Gettape Stotape System (GSS) format. These were the first tapes processed, beginning in January 1994.

Approximately 300 tapes are in the BACKUP format of the VMS operating system. These were processed beginning in May 1994.

The remaining tapes are in other formats, primarily fixed-block EBCDIC and ASCII tapes. Since July 1994 we have been preprocessing these tapes to determine their exact formats.
