Tapes processed in the archiving activity of the PAREP project are being archived in the LBL mass storage system (MSS).
Approximately 700 of the 2000 tapes are in the old LBL Gettape Stotape System (GSS) format. These were the first tapes processed, beginning in January 1994.
Approximately 270 tapes are in the BACKUP format of the VMS operating system. These were processed beginning in May 1994.
The remaining tapes are in other formats, primarily fixed-block EBCDIC and ASCII tapes. Since July 1994 we have been preprocessing these tapes to determine their exact formats.
