1970, 1980, 1990: Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS)
1970
In 1970 the Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) was called
the 1970 Public Use Sample (PUS).
These data were purchased around 1973
by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).
Along with other
1970 Census data,
they were copied to the Gettape-Stotape System (GSS) in compressed format
around 1985. Special LBNL software is required to read the compressed GSS
data format.
The data in compressed format were copied to the Mass Storage System (MSS)
in around 1993.
Contact Deane Merrill (dwmerrill@lbl.gov) for further information.
1970 5 percent sample
The 1970 5 percent PUS consisted of nine 9-track tapes: three each for
the state, county, and neighborhood samples.
1970 15 percent sample
The 1970 15 percent PUS consisted of nine 9-track tapes: three each for
the state, county, and neighborhood samples.

1980 1 percent sample
CIESIN maintains an on-line tabulation program
ULYSSES
for the 1980 and 1990 1% PUMS samples.
The 1980 1 percent PUMS data are offline on one CD-ROM at the University of
California Data Archive and Technical Assistance (UCDATA). University of
California users may contact Fred Gey (gey@ucdata.berkeley.edu) to request
that the CD-ROM be put on line.
1990
The 1990 PUMS data are available from the Census Bureau on
CD-ROM.
The Census Bureau's
Data Extraction Service
is a telnet interface for tabulation of
the 1990 1 percent and 5 percent PUMS data.
When connected, log on as user "desuser".
The 1990 1 percent and 5 percent PUMS data are on line for anonymous
FTP access. For file locations, see
Contents and locations of CD-ROMs.
To run your own software on the 1990 1% or 5% PUMS CDs, ask your system
manager to NFS-mount the CDs that are publicly NFS-exported from LBNL.
For more information, see the University of California
CD-ROM Information System.
Then select "software" and then "NFS".
