Regarding your attempt to get geographic areas and data for
1980 Census level CYPL80 (which are on the damaged tape 38813).

I wrote this file as I went along, searching my way down.
The TAKE HOME MESSAGE is:
You can get the CYPL80 STF1 NDX files, which the area module needs,
by running the following UNIX csh script on one of the LBL Unix machines.
I found 26430 CYPL80s in the United States, where I expected 26437 from
documentation in SEEDIS.  I think the discrepancy is not serious.  Probably
minor corrections which occurred after STF1 was completed.

Here is how I found the data. Save this file for future reference.
This message contains (almost) all the information needed to implement
a future MSS retrieval capability into SEEDIS.

The SEEDIS area module at level CYPL80 uses STF1 NDX files.

The file csa::sy$seedis:[seedis]level.cod contains the line
CYPL80___STF1_____COUNTY80_US___NATION80_LBLH__A_
which shows that STF1 is used for area selection at level CYPL80.

series 1, GSS tape 38813, is defective.
series 2, GSS tape 03484, is defective.
series 4, backup tape G80, is in the Building 50B tape closet.
series 5, backup tape 40121, is in the Building 50A tape vault.
series 6, VMS disk seedis005, no longer exists.  It was copied to 4 and 5 in
	1989.

The contents (file names) of 38813 are listed in
cedr.lbl.gov: /work/seedis/csa3/lsttape/gss/38813.df.

The contents (file names) of 03484 are identical to 38813.
38813 and 03484 were made in 1983, when we still had a GSS write capability.

The contents (file names) of G80 are listed in
cedr.lbl.gov: /work/seedis/csa3/lsttape/bck/g80.df.
The file cedr.lbl.gov: /work/seedis/csa3/lsttape/bck/backup.cod
contains the line
CSA3__50042_____50042 G80  89031040121_____seedis005 3 of 3
which shows that slot G80 contains tape 50042.
