FIRST GENERATION

1. Robert BARDWELL was born in 1646 in London, London, England. He died on 9 Jan 1726 in Hatfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts.1,2 History of Deerfield, by George Sheldon, Vol. II, Published by E. A. Hall & Co., Greenfield, MA, 1896. p. 57.

Came from London, where he was an apprentice to a hatter in 1667; he learned here a new branch of the business, the making of wool hats; was a soldier in the famous swamp fight when the power of the Narragansets was broken, Dec. 18, 1675; April 7, 1676, he was a sergt. under Capt. Turner, and stationed with 44 men under him at Hatfield; he held the same office in the Falls fight; after the war he settled in Hatfield, and set up a hatter's shop.

History of the Town of Whately, Mass., 1661 - 1899, by Jame M. Crafts, pinted by D.L. Crandall, Mann's Block, Orange, Mass, 1899. p. 369.

Came from London, Eng., 1670, and was then said to be twenty-three years of age. He was by trade a hatter, learning his trade in London and was there at the time of the great plaque in 1665 when more than one hundred thousand people were its victims, also at the time of the great fire that swept off thirteen thousand, two hundred houses and shops and ninety churches. After his arrival here we find him actively engaged in the defense of the town, this being his first knowledge of Indian warfare. He was raised to the dignity of a sergeant and was in command of one or two forts in the eastern part of the state. We first learn of his being in the Connecticut Valley when he was sent with dispatches to the troops gathered for the defense of our frontier settlements with orders that if snow fell before he retuned to stay through the winter, so his journey must have been late in the fall of 1675, as he remained at Hatfield. This was at the time when King Philip was on the war path and he came on foot and alone through the forest. He was among the foremost to march to the attack upon Philip's men at what we now know as Turners Falls, 18 May 1676, being active in that gallant fight. In all the hard engagements in which he fought he came off without a serious wound. At this time he made up his mind to remain in Hatfield. He received his share in the division of the lands in Hatfield.
