1855 Massachusetts Census in Shelburne, Franklin County

In addition to the US Census conducted every ten years, a Census of Massachusetts was taken in 1855 and in 1865.  A microfilm copy is available at the library of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association in Deerfield, Massachusetts.

The following files include residents of the Town of Shelburne, Franklin County in 1855.  The tab-delimited files can be viewed with a Web browser.  The comma-separated files can be used with a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel.

seqno = sequential number of first person in this record

cenpage = Census page number

dwelling = sequential number of dwelling-house

household = sequential number of household

dwellings = 1 for first record of this dwelling, 0 for others

head = 1 for head of household, 0 for other members

persons = number of persons in this record

surname = last name of all persons in this record 

name = given name of first person in this record

age (years at last birthday) of first person in this record       

sex = sex of first person in this record

color = white unless otherwise specified; B = black

birthplace = state code

marstat = M(arried), W(idowed), S(ingle), D(ivorced)

occupation

pagetot = total persons on each page

sectot = total persons in each section

remarks

The population of Shelburne in 1855 was 1401, including 693 white males and 708 white females.  The 1401 persons were in 304 families in 238 dwellings.

Principal surnames among the 1401 individuals were BARDWELL (55), FISK (38), DOLE (37), MERRILL (33), SEVERANCE (30), BARNARD and WELLS (28 each), LONG and SMITH (25 each), PRATT (24), ANDERSON (23), PECK (21), ALLEN (17), HAWKS (16), WILSON (15), CARPENTER, FOSTER and LAMSON (14 each); STEELE, SWEET, WHITE and WHITNEY (13 each); ALVORD, ANDREWS and STONE (12 each); HARDY and TAYLOR (11 each); CULVER, KELLETT, KELLOGG, NEWHALL and RICE (10 each).
