1880 U.S. Census in Shelburne, Franklin

The population of Shelburne in 1880 was 1621. There were 365 families,
in 304 dwelling houses.
Many of the households were extended families including grandchildren, aunts and uncles, nephews and nieces, and in-laws. Many households included unrelated boarders, especially males aged 15-25 who worked as laborers. There is one large group of railroad workers, all Italian males and mostly unrelated.
Principal surnames among the 1621 individuals were: Bardwell (54), Fisk/Fiske (48), Smith (40), Long (25), Barnard and Brown (24 each), Severance and Streeter (21 each), Merrill (20), Sweet (19), Peck (17), Allen and Wells (16 each), Gould, Jones, Swan and Thayer (15 each), Koonz, Taylor, Truesdell and Wilcox (14 each), Carpenter and Perkins (13 each), Adams, King, Phillips, Pratt and Ware (12 each), Andrews, Field, Haigis, Newhall and Wiswell (11 each), Anderson, Burrington, Haley and Yell (10 each).
